Remake Case Study - Spider-Man

Spider-Man (2002): Tie-Ins: Schweppes the Hershey Foods Corporation - mail-in poster the Kellogg Company - limited edition Spider-Man toasted oat cereal and pop tarts, mail-in offers for CD-ROM game, a T-Shirt and other merchandise Reebok International - ads featuring Spider-Man wearing their shoes These were comparatively low-key as a direct result of a number of recent marketing failures such as Star Wars Episode 1 3 years prior, wherein companies were left with warehouses full of unsold tie-in products. Brands were cautious and many swore off movie deals like these entirely, but the popularity of the film proved them to be profitable. Toys - action figures (Toy Biz, a division of Marvel Enterprises) PS2 game Trailers: A teaser trailer (which had to be dropped due to featuring the twin towers) consisting of its own short story not present in the final film A second teaser trailer consisting of various shots of Spider-Man swinging through New York. Lion King Marketing Ideas

The original 1994 Lion King film's marketing consisted of a teaser trailer (which was actually the entire opening scene) and a later full trailer going into more detail on the story of the film. There were also numerous tie-ins and merchandise with Burger King, Mattel, Kodak, Nestle and Payless ShoeSource, whatever that is. This consisted of 186 licensed products in 1994. These were (and largely still are) all effective methods of marketing for a big-budget blockbuster, as they appeal mostly to the target audience of children and families, with Burger King bundling toys with children's meals; Mattel producing licensed toys; Kodak producing just a watch as far as I can find and Payless ShoeSource also being there. From all this, Disney made $1bn in 1994, $214 million of which being from toys at Christmas. The Lion King (2019) Marketing But Not What Disney Did What We Would Do: Cinema trailers; online advertising (static adverts on websites, YouTube and other video adverts etc); ...

Job Roles and The Production Process

Image
Job Focus: Film/Video Editor: Manages footage - video, dialogue, sound effects, graphics and visual effects, assembling these together into a final product. This is often done working closely with the director to achieve the desired product. Editors often work on a freelance basis, working on short-term contracts for multiple studios and companies, on projects from advertising to training videos to TV and film. The general editorial process involves receiving a brief, script and/or some form of shot list or storyboard, off of which to base the assembly of raw footage which has itself been ingested from the camera(s). The footage must be arranged into the correct and logical order according to the pre-production materials and the director. There is often also a first rough cut, or 'assembly edit' at an earlier stage before the finer details are worked on. The editor may also be responsible for visual and sound effects, writing voiceover or commentary material, choosing or sugg...

They also aim to provide content of the highest quality in terms of accuracy, presentation and editing. They also aim to provide educational content through their children's programming, as well as content that features and showcases a broad, diverse range of cultures and ethnic groups. Their content must be unbiased and help 'contribute to the social cohesion and wellbeing of the United Kingdom'. Its news coverage must be presented in such a way so as to be 'firmly based on British values of accuracy, impartiality, and fairness'.

Independent - Domino Records

Image
Domino Recording Company (colloquially known as 'Domino') is an independent recording company based in London, with a wing based in Brooklyn, New York which is responsible for U.S. releases. It also has German and French divisions. Domino owns a subsidiary label, Geographic Music, which works with more experimental and unusual music, largely from outside the western world. In 2011, the label decided to look into launching 'The Domino Press', a book publishing division. The label was founded in 1993 by Laurence Bell and Jacqui Rice (seen in this photograph). The majority of their early releases were American artists signed to Drag City (at the same time for U.S. releases) looking for UK distribution. This relationship has been maintained to this day. The label's success was held back during the Britpop era due to their redistribution of American music. Regardless, Domino finally grew thanks to a steady increase in signings with groups such as Franz Ferdinand, Arcti...

Conglomerate - Disney

Image
Burbank, California Owns media companies in all areas October 16th 1923 Top 5 largest conglomerates in terms of revenue Owns many companies that have their own brand, and as such may not explicitly fit what is considered the Disney brand - the brand being the public face of the company. Owns subsidiaries: Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox, ESPN and so on and so forth. Each of these subsidiaries have their own products and their own brands that reflect that. Within a conglomerate such as this are the intellectual properties (IPs) - Disney has those that they created as well as those they bought into. These are all loved and recognised by millions, allowing them to build their success through familiarity, nostalgic appeal and such. This allows them to successfully expand these IPs often into franchises. As for the broader Disney company itself, every possible aspect of production of the products they create is able to be conducted within the Disney Company itself. They mostly st...
